How to Choose a Divorce Lawyer

How to choose a Divorce Lawyer McGrail Law FirmThe divorce process can be very stressful – why add more stress when trying to choose a divorce lawyer? Our blog today addresses a few things you should look for when choosing your attorney to handle your Pennsylvania divorce matter.

Referrals.

The best way to find an attorney is through people that you know and trust. Do you have a friend that has gone through a divorce recently? Ask him or her who they used and if they were happy with their attorney. Many of our clients come to us as referrals from people we have represented in divorce or in other legal matters.

Personal Compatibility.

Divorces involve very personal, emotional issues. It is very important to hire a divorce lawyer who you feel comfortable with so you can speak freely and openly about all issues surrounding your divorce matter. Divorce attorneys truly are “counselors” in every sense of the word – they provide legal advice, counsel you through your divorce and guide you through this sensitive process. If you do not feel comfortable with your attorney, this can make the process more stressful. Choose an attorney who you feel is truly advocating for you, but is also listening to your wants and needs.

Ask Questions.

A lot of them! During your initial meeting with your prospective divorce lawyer, bring a list of questions that you want to have answered. Often, divorce clients are overwhelmed at their initial meeting with a lawyer and do not remember to ask certain questions. View this process as a consumer – you are a person in need of a service and are looking for the best “product.” Just as you are diligent in making purchases in your personal life, do your homework when choosing a divorce lawyer.

Know your own comfort level.

Every individual has a different and unique personality, and attorneys can have very different and varying styles. Maybe you are looking for an extremely aggressive attorney and want to litigate your divorce issues, or you would prefer an attorney to draft a settlement agreement and attempt to resolve your case outside of court. Or maybe you need something right in between. Hire an attorney that has a style compatible to yours, or one that has a style that you are seeking in your legal counsel.

When choosing a divorce lawyer, trust your own judgment. If you can, try to meet with attorneys in person before hiring one. This will give you a much better indication of their personality than just a phone conversation.
